UNHINGED

602 | GRASSHOPPER FOOD BANK

Instructor Nate Hume

W/ Khang Truong

The project begins with the game of how to utilize the existing air rights of the neighboring buildings. Doing so will create a new postured form on the site. Therefore, the project brings the notion of hinging in order to organize and cantilever varying masses on the site. Through hinging, these masses hinge apart to create exterior cracks and hinge inward to create interior overlap. The project will be a food Bank and Production Center focused on grasshopper production for human consumption. Hinging volumes create new entrance opportunities, which exhibits the process of insect production, allowing the invitation of public visitors to enter at various points. Human Circulation is weaved throughout the building, similar to how grasshoppers are conveyored throughout the production process. The exterior cladding infiltrates the interior of the masses to spatially and programmatically re-arrange varying phantom volumes, This creates new spatial conditions in their overlaps and their interstitial spaces.
